Southdown Sheep
The Southdown breed was first refined from local stock on the South Downs by the celebrated sheep breeder John Ellman. Prior to this time farmers did not segregate males and females and so "nobody's son mated with everybody's daughter". Ellman, a contemporary of Bakewell, sought to select traits for conformation and quality of taste whilst preserving the sheep’s fine fleece and ability to thrive of pasture.
What We Do
The Southdown Sheep enterprise at Money's Farm was established to utilise the clover-rich grass leys in the 6 year arable rotation and then recycle nutrients to the soil.
The flock is pedigree and registered with the Southdown Society, helping to protect this once common breed. As the flock is growing the ewe lambs are retained but the ram lambs are grown on the summer pastures and then offered for sale.
